Mie Goreng Cake… beautiful top view

This is the Perfect Cake for instant noodles lovers. I first started having this notion of a Mie Goreng Cake as Lovely our youngest, loves instant noodles. Hmmm I wondered, ….is it possible to make a noodle cake just like the savory Pulut Kuning Tumeric Rice Cake I made for Dad?

One of Lovely’s fave instant noodle flavour is Mie Goreng, a type of special fried noodles Indonesian style. So I thought to myself “How about a Mie Goreng Birthday Cake topped off with all her favourite things?”

In case anyone is wondering, I don’t encourage instant noodle consumption in this family but let’s face it – a lot of us go through this mystifying curious phase in our childhood where we just love instant noodles. During my time, it’s Maggie instant noodles … I still remember the advertising jingle “Maggie-Noodles-Fast-To-Cook, Good-To-Eat”😅 !

Kids then loved it so much the manufacturers actually created a fried snack version which can be eaten uncooked with seasoning and it tasted great!

And that’s exactly where Lovely our youngest is, at the moment. She loves to come home from school and cook herself a packet of Mie Goreng topped off with a self-fried golden fluffy omelette.

4 packets in a 6 inch panInstant noodle bonanza surprise!

Her instant noodle allowance is usually once a month but perhaps once in a lifetime, she gets a birthday bonanza Cake Mie Goreng, made in a tube pan serving up 4 packets of instant noodles, and with all her favourite things on TOP!😁

What to watch out for ….

This Mie Goreng Cake is so simple. What’s more, it looks absolutely stunning and assembles in less than an hour. If you can cook instant noodles, you can make this.

3 easy steps

#1 Cook and season the Mie Goreng

Cook till the noodles are just al dente …

#2 Transfer the Mie Goreng to set in the tube pan (give it minimum 30 minutes)

#3 Unmould and decorate with your favourite toppings

I used my 6-inch tube pan which was perfect. Its hollowed centre gave an eternal ring and once adorned with seafood, my Mie Goreng Cake looked simply gorgeous.

And the look on Lovely’s face was priceless, she politely kept quiet and thought “Uh-oh, mama’s cake failed…it has a lot of holes…“ – Then she looked more closely and saw her favourite instant noodles! As a Cake! 🤣 🤣 🤣

You can also use a standard baking tin – round, square or rectangular, it would all work except you might have to adjust the amount of noodles for the different tins. The noodles actually set well in the pan – give it at least 30 minutes.

Removing Mie Goreng Cake from Tube Pan Cohesive and well-formed noodle cake!

Once the structure is established, the noodles strands basically interlock and create a holding tension which helps to retain its shape after unmoulding.

To set well, make sure to only use the long noodle strands and discard broken bits before cooking.

Discard broken bits as they don’t set well

Have a little extra sauce ready on the side and dollop a couple of spoonfuls to loosen up the noodles once it is sliced and it’s ready to serve. Grandma made fish curry so we also had curry sauce which went superbly with the Mie Goreng 😊 !

And that’s it really. Easy as pie, literally a piece of cake 😄
