Have you ever bought something you just know you will need in future but which, at the time of buying, had no relevance whatsoever? Well, I have 😊
I first saw these cute little pacifiers and baby rattles at a craft shop in the US when we were there in 2016. Don’t know why but those little blue trinkets just called out to me, like a siren song. Now why would I ever need them? I have absolutely no friends expecting any babies and the Sugar Crumble already has her hands full with her own brood of three?
I remember debating for quite a while and rationalizing to meself why I should not. It was certainly not a need and even as a want, the purchase didn’t make sense!
Guess what I used them for? 😄
But I just knew I had to have them. Ahem… did I mention I was like a sailor to their siren song? In the end, gut won over brain, I got them and this was how it was rationalized 😬
ο We were on holiday;
ο One is never practical on vacation;
ο These were a steal; they would cost much more back home (note: no market research done here);
ο These trinkets were adorable and light weight;
ο They take up no luggage space at all;
ο Better to buy & quickly allay whatever maternal instinct that has been awakened;
ο Deprivation might lead to unexpected and unplanned consequences!
So I happily bought, flew them home and packed them away, a feel good souvenir from a well spent holiday!
Our little Star!
Fast forward to 2017, nephew Baby S was born and he’s the cutest ever. I said to my sister, can I bake his Full Month Celebration Cake? And then it all clicked.
Blue for BOY … I suddenly remembered those lovely blue pacifiers and rattles from a year ago. As they say, the rest is history.
Little sugar crumble and I baked up a storm. We did a five tier display of chocolate and lemony cuppies topped off with a giant 1.5 kg giant chocolate cupcake perched right up top. Each chocolate cupcake was adorned by a little blue pacifier or a little blue rata-tat rattle to mark the full month celebration of the family’s newest member.
The Happy Little Baker!
The full month celebration was held at a beautiful restaurant facing the green. As we set up our display, many came and asked to take photos of the little pacifier and rattle cupcakes. Full Month Celebration Cake with the cute ‘siren song’ trinkets was perfect!
As I stood that day watching the cupcakes fly off the stand with the little ones, I remember being so happily smug, marveling at my own clairvoyance (aura!) and elated with my sharp shopping skills (Darn … I’m good😄 !)
What can I say? The Heart knows stuff the Brain can’t explain!
Next time this happens – “Hubby dearest…. see that 1.5C rock ….” I just know what I’ll be following!😋
